I read an article from analysys which discusses IEEE 802.11n protocol, the new generation of WiFi technology, in WiFi phone. The article introduces that though the utilization rate of 802.11n in smart phones is less than 1% in 2008, at least 87% WiFi phones will apply to 802.11n protocol.
Michael Morgan, industry analyst of ABI Research, said, “Chip manufacturer rather than phone provider will push the development of 802.11n in high-end smart phone in 2010. We wait for the customers to accept it, and now it comes the time, people have gradually understood the advantages of 802.11n.” However, he still warned that 802.11n WiFi Cell phone would not supply MIMO or some other advanced functions. Users cannot enjoy the same performance of laptop in smart phone. 802.11n protocol in wifi phone cell will bring into full play in mobile phones till 2014, possibly later.
For phone manufacturers, application of 802.11n protocol wouldn’t cost much based on the current 802.11b and 11g. These older technologies would not easily disappear, because mobile phone requires the most extensive connectivity to operate normally. This also applies to the frequency. 802.11n is the most powerful in 5 GHz band, while b and g protocols can only operate in the 2.4 GHz band. Morgan said: “Keeping providing all of these protocols are very important for service providers.”
As the emergence of 802.11n, an increasing number of products began to use this powerful technology because it provides faster and more reliable wireless connectivity. 802.11n is 7 times faster than 802.11g, 3 times faster than Ethernet. In addition, it has a greater coverage.
Different from Bluetooth technology, WiFi has greater coverage and higher transmission rates, so WiFi mobile phone has become the current fashion trends. WiFi enables us to have long distance calls (including international long-distance), browse the Web, send and receive e-mail, music downloads, digital photos transmission and so on, will no longer worry about the slow pace and high cost problems.
ABI Research’s new research report WiFi handsets – moving to 802.11n points out, WiFi will push into the application of 802.11n in mobile phones. We can see the future of 802.11n in the smart phones from protocol mix.
I’ve read some information about wifi cell phones in sourcinggate. If you want to know more, you can learn more from their blog.
